Where to Buy Authentic EcoTools Online
The brushes are way cheaper on iHerb. For example, the EcoTools 6-Piece Brush Set costs only US$12.99 (around SGD16.90 based on current exchange rates) compared to SGD28.90 from Watsons Singapore. And because you’re getting them directly from the US, you can be sure it’s not some cheap knockoff vs. if you got it from Qoo10 Singapore or a blogshop.
Speaking of knockoffs, even Groupon Singapore seems to have been affected by it. According to this lady, the brush set she got from Groupon Singapore compared to her original set had huge differences — I’ve attached a screenshot of her facebook post below.
If even Groupon is affected by fakes, I’m not sure if I should trust in the ones from blogshops or Qoo10 SG, especially if they can sell the brushes at the same or lower prices than what you can get from the USA (don’t need to profit meh? =x)
Are EcoTools Brushes Made in China?
You may be surprised if you didn’t know this before but yes, these brushes are made in China. This is probably why there are so many counterfeits, since it’d be much easier for the counterfeit makers to copy a product that’s already in the country.
Of course, in an ideal world, all of these criteria would be met perfectly. And while my EcoTools collection is 100% vegan and made with the most sustainable materials I could find, the world isn’t perfect, and we all just have to do the best we can under the circumstances. For example, I would love for everything to be made locally, but if my collection were made in America, it would cost somewhere between $50-$70 per product, way too expensive!
So, the next best option was to find a factory elsewhere with sustainable practices and that factory ended up being in China. I am aware of the human rights issues in many Chinese factories, so I researched this factory to ensure it was a fair workplace. There are no children working in the factory where my EcoTools collection is made and it follows a strict set of labor standards.
Should You Get EcoTools from TaoBao?
If you’re familiar with TaoBao (TaoBao guide here) you might be wondering if you could get the brushes even cheaper ($4 a set!) from TaoBao since they are made in China anyway. The TaoBao listings claim their brushes are authentic, and their prices are much lower than the US-based sites.
However, some of the user feedback mention that the quality of the brushes are not so good. I’ve screenshot and translated in red (with my limited Chinese) the not-so-positive reviews on one of the listings:
There are positive reviews too so it’s not everyone who thinks that they’re badly-made or fake. But if you’ve never bought the real thing before or if you’re getting it as a gift, I would not recommend buying the brush set from TaoBao.
For my next TaoBao haul, I might get one of these just so I can do a comparison with the US-bought ones. If I do that, I’ll post the photos/details on the blog. If you’d like to be informed when there are updates to this and other posts on the blog, subscribe to my newsletter 🙂
How to Tell if Your Brushes are Fake
If you’ve never bought EcoTools before, it’s very difficult to tell whether you’ve gotten a knockoff. The only way to get the original for sure is to get it from Watsons or Guardian Singapore (too expensive!) or directly from the USA from a reliable site like iHerb. But if you’ve already gotten your brushes and want to know whether they’re fake or real, here’s a video with a side-by-side comparison of the fake and real brush sets.
